How To Play Mas

To play mas means you get yourself a costume from one of the Masquerade Bands that's registered with Cariwest and join in the Parade during the festival. This should be done a few months before the festival as the costume makers have hundreds of them to make. However, you may be lucky and get access to one even at a late date. When you join a Mas Band, you are one of the whole composition of that Band which usually has a theme, special colours, etc.

If you are the creative type, and you can talk at least 15 people to join you on the road in costume, you can also bring out your own Masquerade Band. You will have to develop a theme and create the costumes accordingly. Then you must register the band with Cariwest for a fee. Cariwest will provide the truck and deejay for you to dance to on the road. You can choose to be a competing band or a non-competing band, but we encourage people to get into costumes to play mas.
